Leash on Life
Prison Pup Program
Prison Pup Program
The Leash On Life Prison Pup Program at the McCormick Correctional Institution originated in May of 2018. The mission was to establish a relationship with the state level prison and support efforts to positively affect the lives of the incarcerated while giving rescued dogs a second chance at life. The program incorporates the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen requirements and works to have the dogs complete these requirements in order to improve their adoptability.
The American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen test (CGC) is a certification program that evaluates dogs in simulated everyday situations in a relaxed, noncompetitive atmosphere. Dogs that complete the CGC testing are considered reliable family and community members. Along with these skills, the dogs are taught other skills with positive reinforcement. The HSMC holds training for both the dog handlers and dogs every month. The goal is to place the dogs in loving homes as well as giving purpose and confidence to the handlers.
