Truffles
“We adopted our cat Truffles almost 2 years ago. We have been meaning to reach out for a long time and let you know just how much we love her and how well she is doing! She has warmed right up to everyone and our other cat. We think so much of your Humane Society and just wanted to say thank you for everything.”
Truffles was originally brought in from a TNR site where we would normally just fix them, give them a rabies shot, notch their ears (so others knew they were fixed) and return them to the site. Truffles was so friendly that we brought her in and after she was fixed and healthy, she was put up for adoption.
Truffles was obviously not a feral kitty. She was either lost or abandoned. That’s one of the reasons we call these kitties “community cats.” These sites can have very shy and friendly cats.
We are so thankful Truffles is happy in her home and safely living inside.
Richy
We have great news! Richy, a friendly and fun 70 lb brindle-colored mix pup, was adopted! He was picked up as a stray in March of 2023. He is loving but strong and we had trouble finding him a home. We put him in the Leash on Life Prison Pup Training Program. He graduated with flying colors and someone saw his story on the website. He had another dog so he fostered Richy to see if they would get along. Richy is now Thruxton and he gets regular visits to the pond so he can swim and play with his new dog sibling, Chava.
Ellie
We received a video of a skinny dog limping down the road back in October 2017. We went out to investigate and the neighbor’s told us where she lived and that she limped because the Owner had hit in the driveway but never took her to the vet. We found the Owner and offered to bring her dog food. She insisted she was going to buy her some food in a few days. We walked with her and found 9 young puppies living on a garbage pile. We convinced the Owner to let us have the puppies and the mom, who we named Ellie, because the puppies were still nursing and Ellie was too skinny to provide enough milk.
We brought them all back to the shelter and “Puppy Corp” went to work caring for them all. Ellie’s broken front leg and back leg injuries was too old to repair so she had to live with her limp. The puppies thrived and when they were ready, they were adopted out.
Shelter life was very stressful for Ellie. She was not happy being around other dogs and she didn’t enjoy going on adoption because she was unsure of strangers. We moved her to the dog office and added a fenced-in area and a door in the back so she could go in and out. As time went by, we tried to limit her stress and manage her painful arthritis with medication.
Ellie had food and guarding issues but one of our volunteers fell in love with her and saw that with patience, she would make a wonderful companion. Ellie enjoyed riding in the car so they would go through the drive-through for treats. Then Ellie started taking day trips home with her and eventually went on overnights. The volunteer recently moved and she made sure that she had space for Ellie and adopted her!
It takes someone very special to adopt a “less-adoptable” dog or cat and we are so excited that Ellie has found her person!
Chloe
We first picked up Chloe in June of 2023, along with 6 more small pups ranging from 6 months to 3 yrs old. They were scared, unsocialized, and needed medical care. Many HSMC volunteers spent hours sitting and working with these pups, both at the shelter and in foster homes. Chloe (blond) was the last pup and she is now adopted!
Jean and Thomas have experience with dogs of all sizes and dogs coming out of bad situations. Their current dog, Cookie, was also neglected. They understand that Chloe will take time to adapt and be comfortable in her new space. Knowing that patience and understanding is key in Chloe's success, they have done such a wonderful job in a short time.
Chloe took to Cookie almost immediately. Cookie has shown her the ropes and that this new place is not so bad! The first night she was sleeping in the bed with everyone else. She loves to play with her new sister. They have a whole basket of toys and have a fences in yard with a dog door.
Chloe is doing great. She is still not crazy about the idea of being picked up, so her new parents are just going at her pace.
Pearl
"It's been a year since Pearl came home with us. It's been a joy seeing her become so trusting and happy in our family. Just wanted to say thank you."
Jagger
Original picked up in July of 2018, Jagger had some wounds, scars, and was heartworm positive. He was treated for heartworm disease and given the appropriate vaccinations and care. Jagger was very intelligent and playful and shelter life was hard on him. He was moved him to the Leash On Life prison pup training program. He graduated but stayed at the prison while we looked for an adopter. Then COVID hit and everything was shut down and adoption opportunities stopped for him.
A MCCI employee had met Jagger many times and fell in love with him. When he was in a position to adopt a dog, he contacted us about Jagger. We were thrilled. His new human dad helped Jagger transition from living in a prison environment to living in home. At 8-1/2 yrs old, Jagger enjoys sofa time, toys and an occasional pup cup. He even has his own Flack Jacket and personalized collar! We, and your dog trainers at MCCI, are so happy for you, Jagger!!
Deja
A family saw one of our kittens, a calico named Deja, on our site. The mom and daughter came to the shelter to see her and instantly knew she was the cat for them. She now is part of a wonderful family with another cat and a couple of dogs which Deja fits right in with.
Last year they entered Deja in a cat show. She took home 6 ribbons. They said she loved participating in the variety of events, purring and eating up the attention. She fits in perfectly in her forever home. Way to go, Deja!
