All patients are given pre-operative pain medication as part of their anesthesia protocol. They receive fluids under their skin to help maintain hydration. They are sent home with post-operative pain medication.
All animals are vaccinated against Rabies unless they show proof of a current Rabies vaccine.
DHLPP and Bordetella vaccines are also available for dogs.
FVRCP/FELV vaccine is also available for cats.
A microchip can be placed at the time of surgery for pet identification.
Why Should I Spay or Neuter My Pet?
Spay and neuter surgeries help fight the overpopulation of cats and dogs by reducing the number of unplanned litters. These surgeries provide your pet with important health and behavioral advantages while offering you financial benefits as well.
Sterilized animals live longer, happier lives. Spaying eliminates the stress and discomfort that females endure during heat periods, eliminates the risk of uterine cancer, and greatly reduces the risk of mammary cancer. Neutering makes males far less likely to roam or fight, prevents testicular cancer, and reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Altered animals are less likely to contract deadly, contagious diseases, such as feline AIDS and feline leukemia, that are spread through bodily fluids.
Male animals contribute to the companion animal overpopulation crisis even more than females do. Just one unsterilized male animal can impregnate dozens of females, creating dozens upon dozens of unwanted offspring. Neutering also eliminates male animals’ risk of testicular cancer and reduces unwanted behaviors such as biting.
Will spaying and neutering affect my animal’s weight?
No, Cats and dogs become overweight and inactive because their guardians feed them too much and exercise them too little, not because they are sterilized.
Spaying and neutering does decrease the resting metabolic rate, therefore calorie intake decreases when animals are altered. It is imperative that we decrease the amount of food being offered after surgery by about 25% to help prevent unwanted weight gain.
Financial Benefits
The cost of spay/neuter services is far less than the cost of a new litter.
The health benefits associated with spay/neuter services can reduce future medical bills associated with the potential health complications mentioned above.
Behavioral Benefits
Spayed female pets won’t go into heat or engage in heat-related behaviors such as increased howling and mate seeking.
Neutered male pets will be less inclined to urine mark their territory.
Neutered male pets will be less motivated to escape to look for a mate.
Spaying and neutering will reduce or eliminate behaviors that you don’t want, such as aggression and urine marking. Neutered males are less likely to roam, fight, or mark their territory with urine, Spayed females experience less hormone-related moodiness. In exchange, your companions will likely become more interested in you (rather than finding a mate) and will still protect your family.
